Miniature island of stonemasons

Saturdays 3 or 4.5 hours max 12 persons Easy

Explore old quarries where nature regained

Take a boat ride with us to Vrnik, the only inhabited islet in Korcula’s archipelago. Vrnik is famed for its white limestone, which had been exported as far as Stockholm or even Wahington. Nowadays, it is a small paradise with a purely relaxed atmosphere. Without shops or cars, this is a completely unhurried place, perfect to slow down and to enjoy a swim on hot summer days. Explore with us the old quarries, stroll along the shore, peak into the old island school and enjoy a plateful of local cuisine.

Old quarries

You will visit with us the old quarries. The limestone of finest quality had been excavated from 29 quarries since ancient Roman times. Used in Diocletian’s palace in Split, it was highly famed ever since. No more in use since the 1960ies, the quarries are meanwhile regained by nature.

Great photo spots and a swim

Every meter you walk, there are beautiful photo opportunities: old stone houses, reminiscence of the days of busy workmanship, flowers prospering on the stony coast, in the inexhaustibly blowing winds.

The story of stonemasons

Hear from your professional guide the stories of stonemasons, who have developed their craft over centuries. Once there were 600 people living here - and until the 1950s more than 30 children went to the island’s elementary school.

Lunch or Dinner

Enjoy the company for lunch or dinner and sit in the shadowy court of a small inn. Treat yourself to a plateful of local, plain cuisine - cooked with enthusiasm by an islander couple.
